Everything the golden path needs. Nothing else.
Teacher assigns, student codes, teacher reviews. Every feature in KodeStep exists to make that loop faster, fairer and easier to trust.
For teachers
Grading night, retired
Test-driven challenges grade themselves the moment students submit, hidden tests included. You see results, not stacks of tabs.

Assignment types with smart defaults
Homework, assessment, project or practice. Each type pre-sets the resubmission policy and when the example solution is shown. Override anything per assignment.
Status at a glance
Not started, in progress, needs review, passed: one screen per assignment, with filters and a gradebook CSV export.
Resubmission controls
Unlimited, single or limited attempts, a resubmission cutoff, and assignments you close when you're ready. Give one student an extra attempt or a personal extension. Late work is flagged automatically.
Submission history
Every submission is timestamped by the server and kept with the exact version of the challenge it was graded against. A student's recent runs and submits are one click away.
View as student
See exactly what one of your students sees, read-only and recorded in the audit log, so “I can't find the assignment” takes seconds to resolve.
Starter packs
30 pre-sequenced packs from the curated library. Import one and get your own copies of its challenges plus draft assignments, ready for your due dates.
Review & feedback
AI drafts. You decide.
For visual HTML and CSS challenges, a teacher can ask for an AI review summary that drafts strengths and suggestions. The outcome is always yours: the AI never scores, passes or fails a student. It is built but switched off, and stays off until our AI provider confirms zero data retention in writing. After that it runs only for schools that turn it on.
- Runs only when a teacher clicks it. Never automatic, and never shown to students.
- Code comments are removed and no name, email or account ID is sent. Schools can switch it off entirely, and staff can exclude individual students.
- Paste detection is transparent. Flags are context for your conversation, not proof.

AI review summary
- Strength: the card layout uses grid with consistent spacing.
- Strength: semantic markup, with an article element used correctly.
- Suggestion: talk through the missing hover and focus states.
You decide the outcome. The summary only drafts.
Challenge authoring
Your curriculum, your challenges
The curated library gets you started, but your course is yours. Author challenges with your own tests, starter code, design references and working assets, private to your school.
- Three test visibility tiers: visible during practice, hidden until submit, and secret, which shows students only pass or fail.
- Test My Challenge runs your example solution in both the browser and the grading server, and flags any disagreement before students see it.
- Submissions keep the exact version they were graded against. Editing a challenge never changes grades already given.
Test cases
- renders three list itemsVisible
- uses a semantic <ul> elementVisible
- handles an empty listHidden until submit
- edge case: 1,000 itemsSecret
For students
An editor that stays out of the way
No installs and no environment setup. Just a clean editor, fast feedback, and work that saves itself.
Run before you submit
Practice runs check your code against the visible tests, instantly in the browser for HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Only Submit is the formal attempt.
Live preview for web challenges
HTML and CSS render next to the code, beside the design you're matching.
Work that saves itself
Auto-save runs in the background with an honest status. It never says saved when it isn't, and it retries if the connection drops.
Clear expectations
New assignments, feedback and results arrive as in-app notifications, and deadlines always show in your school's timezone.
Any device in the backpack
Full editing on laptops and Chromebooks, and a special-character toolbar on phones and other small screens.
Accessible by design
Keyboard-first and screen-reader friendly, built to WCAG 2.1 AA. Tab indents in the editor, and Escape always gets you out.
For IT & administrators
Ready for the questions IT will ask
Familiar sign-in
Google, Microsoft, or email and password with breached-password checks. Schools can restrict the Google and Microsoft sign-in options; email and password sign-in always stays available.
LMS integration, planned
LTI 1.3 with Schoology, including grade passback, is planned and not yet available. Today KodeStep runs standalone, with a gradebook CSV export.
Isolated execution
Graded code runs on a separate, firewalled server with no access to student records, the database or platform credentials.
AI that never grades
AI review is off by default, teacher-triggered, and never scores a student. It stays off until zero data retention is confirmed in writing.
